Oscar Bluemner, a Prussian-born American Modernist painter, was a figure whose life and work encapsulated the tumult and transition of the early 20th century. Born Friedrich Julius Oskar Blümner on June 21, 1867, in Prenzlau, Kingdom of Prussia, which is now part of Germany, Bluemner's journey to artistic recognition was one marked by both passion and struggle.

In 1893, he moved to Chicago, where he worked as a draftsman at the World's Columbian Exposition.
